Physical Requirements

Standing at the bench for extended periods. Sitting at desks and computers for long periods. Walking some extended distances to locations of need for use of service centers or collaborations. Continuous working with materials requiring personal protective equipment in accord with EH&S policy.



Shift

Primarily Days Monday – Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm, some evenings and weekends are possible due to experimentation.



Job Summary

A Scientist III position is immediately available in the Spassieva Laboratory at the Department of Physiology, the University of Kentucky, Lexington KY.

The scientist will be working on projects studying sphingolipid neurotoxicity, specifically investigating mechanisms underlying sphingoid base-induced neurotoxicity in ataxia and other neurodegenerative diseases. The research in these projects includes utilizing neuronal and glial primary cell cultures and animal models and employing contemporary technologies for molecular, biochemical, imaging, and lipid analyses.



The successful candidate is expected to have knowledge in neuroscience and/or cell biology and experience with in vitro techniques and with rodent animal models. Knowledge and experience in lipids are desired, but not limiting for a successful application. The successful candidate is expected to have substantial level of independence in project development and manuscript writing.
