Job Description

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

Financial Administration (FAD) is dedicated to advancing Harvard University’s teaching and research mission by stewarding its resources; providing support, guidance, and consultation; ensuring compliance with university and federal guidelines; mitigating risk; pursuing operational excellence; and promoting the financial health of the University.

The Senior Manager of Financial Accounting and Reporting will lead a team of 3 Senior Financial accountants to facilitate the University’s financial reporting on a quarterly basis, manage the annual external audit and compile the University’s annual financial report. The Senior Manager of Financial Accounting and Reporting is a member of the central leadership team within the University’s Office of the Controller and plays a vital role in communicating, collaborating with, and providing customer service to controllers, financial managers and others University-wide.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Lead a team of senior financial accountants (3) and support team development.

Financial Reporting and Analysis:

  • Manage and review the preparation of consolidated quarterly and annual reporting deliverables, including annual projections and fluctuation analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with US-GAAP and University internal controls/policies.
  • Oversee the compilation of financial information for inclusion in the University’s annual financial report and Form 990.

Regulatory and Compliance Requirements:

  • Assist with University-wide compilation and review of reporting to external agencies, including certain Federal and regulatory compliance requirements, such as Section 117 foreign gift and contract reporting, NSF Foreign Financial Disclosure Report and EZ-Audit.

Audit Coordination:

  • Serve as the primary liaison to external auditors to oversee and manage the year-end audit.
  • Coordinate with various schools/units across the University to ensure audit deadlines and expectations are met.

Accounting Expertise:

  • Research complex accounting transactions, including any new or updated GAAP pronouncements; create and update University policies as needed

Collaboration and Customer Service:

  • Plan and organize the bi-monthly Financial Managers Forums, a group of over 100 financial managers from across the University, including presenting topics as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively and deliver quality customer service to the Harvard financial community, promoting information sharing and providing technical accounting guidance enhancing financial processes and ensuring alignment with strategic objectives

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 8 years’ relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master’s degree and/or CPA license is a plus; a master’s degree or CPA license, along with prior public accounting experience, may be considered in lieu of years of experience.
  • Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”); knowledge of not for profit/higher education accounting a plus.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial systems and data query tools.
  • Effective oral and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to manage and develop staff.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a large and complex organization.

  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week: This is a hybrid position requiring 2 days per month. Additional days may be required based on business needs. Details to be reviewed during the interview process.

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
