Job Summary

The Service Center TCAT Senior Accountant is responsible for ensuring that all account maintenance, transaction processing, and reporting related to accounting are provided in a timely and accurate manner and in compliance with all applicable institutional, TBR, Federal, and State regulations, policies, and guidelines. The Service Center TCAT Senior Accountant executes and audits complex accounting transactions utilizing sophisticated technology to provide professional services. The Service Center TCAT Senior Accountant provides leadership and oversight to the Service Center TCAT Accountant.

The Service Center TCAT Senior Accountant works closely with their assigned TCATs and is expected to provide a high level of customer service to all institutions served.

This position may have the opportunity to work remote within the state of Tennessee but with periodic visits to the TBR System Office (Nashville, TN) at the employee’s expense, and potential travel to Tennessee TBR colleges may be necessary.

Job Duties

  • 45% - General Accounting • Monitors the general ledger for assigned TCATs • Approves journal vouchers prepared by TCAT accountants for assigned TCATs • Approves bank reconciliations prepared by accountants for assigned TCATs • Monitors month-end close, quarterly review, and year-end close for assigned TCATs - (Essential)
  • 10% - Reporting • Ensures accurate and timely preparation of all annual and ad hoc reports for assigned TCATs • Manages preparation of financial statements and various other required reports to ensure compliance with financial reporting requirements of GASB, AICPA, and federal and state laws and guidelines for assigned TCATs - (Essential)
  • 5% - Audit Support & Compliance • Assists supervisor with audit responses related to assigned TCAT accounting • Monitors the accounting systems for internal controls, accuracy of information, and account classification for assigned TCATs and provides effective financial monitoring and reporting services - (Essential)
  • 10% - Supervision • Supervises accountants and interns to ensure timely and proper execution of finance activities for assigned TCATs - (Essential)
  • 5% - Capital Assets • Approves all capitalized asset purchases for assigned TCATs • Reviews the annual inventory of capital assets to determine changes needed for capitalized asset records for assigned TCATs - (Essential)
  • 10% - Budgeting • Manage the preparation of Banner budget reports for assigned TCATs • Reviews and approves budget revisions submitted by assigned TCATs between budget cycles to determine appropriateness and compliance with TBR policies - (Essential)
  • 10% - Customer Service • Fields TCAT President or TCAT finance employee questions and researches accounting concerns • Works cooperatively and effectively with other departments • Provides consultative services and training to TCAT institutions based on functional area expertise in support of accounting related best practice implementation - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting
• Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in accounting or auditing in a college, university, or state government
• Experience in accounting or auditing at a TBR institution
• Experience with Banner or similar ERP system
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• In-depth knowledge of college and university accounting, budgeting, and NACUBO standards
• Knowledge of financial reporting requirements of GASB, AICPA, TBR and the State of Tennessee
• Broad knowledge of federal and state laws and guidelines
• A willingness and passion to learn new hardware and software systems that are consistent with duties
• Ability to effectively analyze data and inquiries, think critically, and make appropriate decisions
• Effective organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work as part of a team or work alone without close supervision
