What Success Looks Like in Your First 90 Days
Within your first three months, you are independently diagnosing and servicing oil-fired heating systems, completing clean, accurate service documentation, and responding professionally to both routine and emergency calls. You understand local codes and safety standards, manage your time effectively across service calls, and know when to troubleshoot independently versus escalating complex issues.
What You’ll Actually Do in Your First 30 Days
- Complete onboarding, safety training, and any required licensing or certification refreshers
- Shadow experienced technicians to learn Hocon service procedures, customer expectations, and documentation standards
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleanings, inspections, and basic repairs under supervision
- Begin independently completing service tickets and entering accurate notes with support from the team
Core Responsibilities
- Diagnose, service, and repair residential and light commercial oil-fired heating equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance including tune-ups, cleanings, and safety inspections
- Respond to no-heat and emergency service calls, including participation in an on-call rotation
- Accurately complete service orders, work notes, and parts billing each day
- Maintain service vehicles, tools, and equipment in safe working condition
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, environmental regulations, and local codes
- Immediately report incidents, safety concerns, or accidents to the General Manager
- Perform physical work including lifting, carrying, bending, and working in confined or mechanical spaces
Must Have
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Prior hands-on experience servicing oil-fired heating systems
- Ability to independently diagnose and repair heating equipment
- Willingness to work on-call and outside normal business hours during peak heating season
- Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting up to 75 lbs
Nice to Have
- State oil burner technician license or equivalent certification
- Experience with multiple burner manufacturers and control systems
- HVAC or plumbing background
- Strong customer communication skills and professional presence
- Basic computer proficiency for service ticketing and documentation
Education
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent technical training and experience.
