Position Purpose
The Yard Specialist plays a critical role in the daily flow, organization, safety, and presentation of the equipment yard. This position is responsible for managing incoming and outgoing machinery (customer repairs, sales inventory), performing thorough check-ins/check-outs, maintaining yard cleanliness, supporting field service technicians, and staging equipment for transport and customer delivery.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities & Key Accountabilities
- Equipment Logistics & Check-In / Check-Out
- Inspection & Documentation: Inspect all incoming and outgoing equipment for damage, fluid levels, fuel status, cleanliness, and hour meter readings. Complete formal digital or paper check-in/check-out reports.
- Loading & Unloading: Safely assist transport drivers and customers with loading, unloading, and securing machinery on trailers and flatbeds.
- Yard Organization: Position equipment strategically in designated yard areas to maximize operational efficiency, visual appeal, and ease of transport or customer display.
- Equipment Maintenance & Wash Bay Operations
- Washing & Detailing: Pressure-wash, clean, and detail machinery returning from rental jobs or field repairs before moving them to active sales or rental lines.
- Basic Service Support: Monitor fluid levels (engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, DEF), grease grease-points, check tire pressure/track tension, and top off fluids as needed.
- Tagging & Routing: Clearly tag equipment requiring maintenance or repair and move units to designated service staging areas; communicate repair needs promptly to the shop manager or service advisors.
- Yard Safety, Staging & Facility Support
- Facility Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free yard and wash bay. Perform routine trash removal, wash bay pit cleaning, and shop organization.
- Safety & Compliance: Strictly follow company safety protocols, wear required PPE (steel-toe boots, hi-vis vests, eye/hearing protection) and report any unsafe yard conditions or equipment damage immediately.
- Field Support: Assist shop and field service technicians with moving heavy components, organizing staging areas, and fetching tools or attachments when required.
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience working in a heavy equipment yard, construction, agricultural machinery dealership, logistics, or related industrial setting.
- Proven experience operating heavy machinery (skid steers, forklifts, excavators, loaders) in tight spaces safely.
- Must pass any drug screens, background checks, and any pre-employment tests, which will be conducted in accordance with applicable law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong attention to detail when performing equipment damage inspections and safety checks.
- Clear communication skills with transport drivers, service managers, and shop personnel.
- Basic digital literacy (tablet or handheld device experience for inventory tag systems and inspection apps).
Physical Requirements – Heavy Equipment Yard Specialist
- Working in a machinery yard is a physically demanding role that involves heavy lifting, constant outdoor exposure, and operating high-capacity equipment.
- Strength & Material Handling
- Heavy Lifting: Ability to routinely lift, push, pull, or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs (e.g., heavy buckets, hydraulic hoses, buckets of grease, attachment couplers, and track pins).
- Tool & Attachment Usage: Physical capacity to manually position, torque, and align heavy metal attachments, pin-on buckets, and trailer ramps using sledgehammers, pry bars, and impact wrenches.
- Vehicle & Machine Loading: Securing equipment on transport trailers requires pulling heavy steel tie-down chains, ratcheting binders, and handling heavy-duty straps.
- Mobility & Physical Dexterity
- Clambering & Climbing: Frequently mounting and dismounting large machinery (excavators, wheel loaders, dozers) multiple times per day using 3-point contact, requiring strong grip strength, balance, and leg strength.
- Bending & Kneeling: Stooping, bending, crawling under machinery, and kneeling on concrete or dirt surfaces to inspect undercarriages, check fluid drain plugs, verify track tension, and perform grease-point maintenance.
- Overhead & Confined Work: Reaching overhead and working in tight engine compartments or under cab structures during cleaning and preliminary safety inspections.
- Stamina & Environmental Resilience
- Outdoor Exposure: Ability to work on your feet outdoors for 8 to 10+ hours per day in all weather extremes (heat, sun, wind, rain, and mud).
- Vibration & Machinery Operation: Capacity to handle continuous whole-body vibration when maneuvering heavy machinery across rough, unpaved yard terrain.
- Noise & Dust Tolerance: Endurance to operate in high-noise, high-dust environments near heavy diesel engine operation, pressure washers, and shop machinery (with required PPE).
- Vision & Sensory Capabilities
- Depth Perception & Visual Acuity: Precise spatial awareness to safely maneuver large equipment within tight yard spaces, align attachments with pin holes, and guide transport trucks without striking structures or other inventory.
- Auditory Awareness: High situational awareness to detect warning alarms, back-up beepers, horn signals, and radio communications in a busy industrial yard.
