SOF Small Unit Tactics (SUT) Instructor

SUT Instructors will support military cadre in the delivery and evaluation of small unit tactics training across classroom, range, and austere field environments. This position requires extensive field operations, tactical instruction, student evaluation, live-fire support, land navigation, and the physical ability to accompany students throughout demanding day and night training exercises.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as an assistant instructor supporting military cadre in the delivery of Small Unit Tactics (SUT) instruction in classroom, range, and remote field environments.
- Provide instruction, demonstrations, technical training assistance, and student evaluation across General Subjects, Land Navigation, Weapons Marksmanship, Mounted and Dismounted Patrolling, and Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT).
- Support squad- and platoon-level tactical training, including raids, ambushes, movement to contact, patrol base activities, and other mounted and dismounted patrolling exercises.
- Observe and evaluate student tactical performance during practical application exercises and provide comprehensive oral and written evaluations and counseling feedback in accordance with the Individual Student Assessment Plan (ISAP) and applicable SOPs.
- Maintain constant line-of-sight safety supervision and positive student control throughout day and night tactical training operations.
- Provide hands-on technical training assistance during static-range and tactical live-fire exercises.
- Safely draw, transport, handle, account for, and employ small arms, pyrotechnics, and live ammunition in support of training operations.
- Assist military cadre with the coordination and execution of squad- and platoon-level field training exercises.
- Participate in and support tactical infiltration training involving fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.
- Initiate and coordinate emergency MEDEVAC procedures during high-risk training when required, including transmission of standard military 9-Line MEDEVAC and MIST reports.
- Support Helicopter Landing Zone (HLZ) safety and coordination procedures during emergency evacuation operations.
- Conduct foot and vehicle navigation across improved roads, unimproved roads, heavily forested terrain, and rugged sandy/off-road environments during daylight, blackout, and adverse weather conditions.
- Navigate using military and civilian maps, terrain association, road signs, and lensatic compasses without reliance on GPS.
- Operate Government-owned and GSA-leased vehicles, including 15-passenger vans, cargo vans, and 1/2-ton and 3/4-ton two-wheel and four-wheel drive light utility trucks.
- Attend pre-class coordination briefings, daily instructor deconfliction meetings, and post-evaluation After Action Reviews (AARs) as directed by SUT cadre leadership.
- Utilize Government-Furnished Equipment (GFE), NIPRNet workstations, and authorized military training management systems to record student evaluations, counseling documentation, academic rosters, and other required training information.
- Conduct official correspondence using government enterprise email and maintain accurate administrative and academic records.
- Maintain professional military bearing, grooming, appearance, and conduct throughout all training activities.
- Wear and maintain required OCP uniforms and contractor-furnished tactical field equipment in accordance with applicable standards.
Required Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizen.
- Valid U.S. driver's license.
- Must hold an active Secret Security Clearance
- Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC).
- Must be able to successfully undergo a favorable Tier 1 (T1) background investigation and complete required Cyber Awareness, Information Assurance, Operations Security, and related annual training.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Small Unit Tactics, including mounted and dismounted patrolling operations.
- Experience with tactical subjects including land navigation, weapons marksmanship, raids, ambushes, movement to contact, patrol base operations, and MOUT.
- Ability to provide small-group instruction, tactical demonstrations, student observation, performance evaluation, and written and verbal counseling feedback.
- Knowledge of military range operations and the safe handling and accountability of small arms, ammunition, and pyrotechnics.
- Familiarity with standard military 9-Line MEDEVAC and MIST reporting procedures.
- Ability to safely operate passenger vans, light utility trucks, cargo vans, and comparable Government vehicles.
- Ability to navigate cross-country and over unimproved terrain using maps, terrain association, and a lensatic compass without GPS.
- Ability to work extended hours in remote field environments during day and night operations and under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain professional military bearing and comply with applicable grooming and uniform standards.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to use Government computer systems and training management applications for student evaluations, counseling records, academic rosters, and official correspondence.
Physical Fitness and Field Requirements:
- Must maintain an exceptional level of physical fitness necessary to accompany and evaluate students across rugged, heavily forested, and sandy terrain under varying weather conditions.
- Must be physically capable of moving up to 20 kilometers cross-country on foot while carrying a military-style rucksack weighing approximately 30–45 pounds.
- Must be physically capable of completing a 12-mile foot march with a 45-pound rucksack within three (3) hours.
- Must possess the stamina necessary to participate in continuous day and night patrols ranging from approximately 6–16 kilometers.
- Must be capable of operating in austere field environments for extended periods, including field operations lasting up to five (5) days without resupply.
- Must be able to carry required food, water, tactical equipment, and personal sustainment equipment throughout field training operations.
Uniform and Contractor-Furnished Equipment Requirements:
SUT Instructors participating in training must maintain military grooming and professional appearance standards and wear an AR 670-1-compliant Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform as required. Instructors will be responsible for maintaining required uniforms, field gear, and personal sustainment equipment necessary to perform training operations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee will routinely work in both classroom and austere outdoor field environments. The position requires prolonged standing, walking, running, climbing, bending, carrying equipment, and movement over uneven, rugged, wooded, and sandy terrain. Employees must be capable of carrying a 30–45-pound rucksack and other tactical equipment for extended distances and participating in day and night training operations under varying weather conditions.
The employee may be exposed to extreme temperatures, rain, humidity, dust, mud, weapons fire, pyrotechnics, aircraft operations, tactical vehicles, and other conditions associated with military field and live-fire training environments. The employee must be capable of maintaining situational awareness and safely performing duties during extended and physically demanding training events.
