Sr. Tunnel Inspector, Construction Management

The Sr. Construction Inspector, Construction Management provides advanced-level field inspection and oversight for complex drainage, water, and wastewater infrastructure projects; with a primary focus on underground/tunneling projects. This role ensures construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications, codes, and regulatory requirements while serving as a lead field representative for the project team. The Sr. Tunnel Inspector supports project delivery by coordinating field activities, mentoring junior inspectors, reviewing technical submittals, and assisting with issue resolution, change order evaluation, and quality management.
What you will do:
- Perform advanced, comprehensive field observation for major construction projects, primarily tunnel construction, but including water and wastewater treatment facilities, pipelines, pump stations, storage tanks, and related infrastructure.
- Conduct daily on-site inspection of underground tunnel construction to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Serve as a key field liaison, coordinating with clients, contractors, consultants, designers, and regulatory agencies.
- Measure and record daily tunneling progress and material volumes generated and disposed; document contractor manpower, equipment, and material stored on site; and assist in agreement on the contractors monthly pay quantities.
- Interpret complex plans and specifications; ensure contractor compliance with engineering design requirements, permits, standards, and safety regulations.
- Review contractor schedules, evaluate progress trends, identify risks or delays, report on issues arising that are contrary to the overall project plan, and provide recommendations to the project manager.
- Coordinate with thirdparty testing agencies; verify testing compliance and interpret results for conformance with contract specifications.
- Oversee and validate field survey data; review layout, elevations, alignment, and quality of construction tolerances.
- Identify field issues, evaluate technical implications, and assist in resolving conflicts through coordination with engineers, designers, and contractors.
- Participate in review and evaluation of potential change orders, design clarifications, RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings.
- Support quality control and quality assurance processes throughout construction; document deficiencies and track corrective actions.
- Serve as a field mentor and resource to inspectors by providing guidance, training, and support on inspection practices, documentation, and procedures.
- Attend construction meetings and maintain strong communication across clients, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Positions self to access tools and materials in various locations.
- Traverses job sites having uneven terrain, slopes, confined spaces, or reinforced trenches.
- Moves materials weighing up to 75 pounds periodically.
- Conducts visual assessments of task quality and job site safety.
- Ascends/descends into job site areas to complete inspections and data collection.
- May remain in stationary position for extended periods.
What you will bring:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree or technical coursework in construction management, engineering technology, civil engineering, or related field preferred.
- 15 + years of progressively responsible experience in construction inspection, construction management, or civil engineering.
- Extensive experience with water/wastewater infrastructure construction preferred.
- Experience leading field inspection activities or mentoring other inspectors is highly desirable
- Possession of a valid drivers license with a clean driving record and the ability to operate a motor vehicle is required.
- Completion of OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour Construction Awareness training is required
- Advanced inspection certifications preferred, such as:
- NICET Level IIIII (i.e., Materials Testing)
- ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician
- Other relevant state or industry inspection credentials
- Ability to obtain additional certifications as required by project specifications.
- Microsoft Suite Products (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.).
- Ability to use Bluebeam for editing, marking up, collaborating, and sharing PDF construction documents is required.
- Experience using construction management and inspection reporting tools (e.g., eBuilder, Procore, BIM 360, or similar).
- Ability to use smartphones, tablets, GPS, and digital field tools for inspection activities.
- Primarily field-based role must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Depending on specific project requirements and/or limitations, the inspector should anticipate/consider the preponderance of the work (i.e., work shift) to be performed underground in the vicinity of the tunneling operation/Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).
- Must be able to work onsite at a WSB office, as needed, as required by the project, client, or hiring manager.
- Standard work schedule will include the need to work extended hours (10-hour shifts), nights, or weekends as needed based on project demands.
- Reliable transportation required and the ability to travel daily within assigned territory.
- Ability to work nightshifts for extended periods (average 30-day duration rotation).
- Travel may be required.
