Job Synopsis

The Transformative Justice Coordinator will be responsible for MCC Central States's work responding to issues of mass incarceration and restorative justice through a transformative justice lens. This work includes education and capacity building with constituents, congregations, and partners, partner- and project-based program development, and regional-level advocacy with the overarching goal of systemic and cultural movement towards a just peace in a carceral society. The position will be highly collaborative working closely with partners serving justice-impacted people, MCC colleagues, and congregations, and will involve a diversity of tasks to advance transformative justice throughout the region.

Essential: 

  • ​​Bachelors degree​ in Restorative Justice, Peacemaking and Social Change, Conflict Transformation, Community Organizing, Intercultural Studies, Theology/Ministry, or related field (will consider experience in lieu of formal degree completion)
  • ​​1-3 years relevant experience​ working with justice-impacted peoples and/or communities impacted by incarceration, restorative/transformative justice practices, and education in congregational or community settings.
  • Training in anti-oppression, restorative/transformative justice, and facilitation skills
  • Basic computer competencies (ability to proficiently use Word, Outlook/email, Zoom), willingness to learn other systems within MCC

Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s).

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Restorative Justice, Peacemaking and Social Change, Conflict Transformation, Community Organizing, Intercultural Studies, Theology/Ministry, or related field.
  • Training/experience in restorative and transformative justice practices relating to the criminal-justice system, re-entry efforts, advocacy, and/or trauma-informed conflict transformation and nonviolence education (e.g., STAR or similar certification)
  • Awareness of the range of Anabaptist denominations and communities that comprises MCC’s global constituency

Specific Tasks and Duties:

Education and Capacity Building – 35%

  • Develop and oversee a plan for education and capacity building on issues of mass incarceration and restorative/transformative justice in constituent communities across the Central States region
  • Facilitate educational activities and events for congregations and other constituent groups (colleges, conferences, communities) on issues of transformative justice and mass incarceration (e.g., You Got Booked, trauma-informed conflict transformation, restorative justice, healthy communities, environmental justice, etc.)
  • Coordinate a “Pipeline-to-Prison” Learning Tour within the Central States region annually
  • Develop and support volunteers seeking to advance this work
  • Support churches in building capacity for supporting justice-impacted persons and the communities/families impacted by incarceration (e.g., conflict transformation, re-entry, systems education, networks of support, local advocacy)
  • Collaborate to support new opportunities for learning and connection related to this work among Young Adults in CS region.

Partnership/Project Coordination – 35%

  • Oversee and serve as the primary point of contact for partner accompaniment and collaborative projects (up to 4 grant-based partnerships annually) supporting justice-impacted people and/or advancing transformative justice (e.g., re-entry, trauma-informed conflict transformation, restorative justice, diversion/alternatives to incarceration, etc.)
  • Facilitate connections and activities related to “Welcome Back Packs” and other Material Resource (MR) responses supporting justice-impacted peoples, collaborating with MCC CS MR staff and volunteers
  • Provide support and resourcing for MCC-implemented collaborative projects related to Transformative Justice (e.g., educational activities, Peace Camps, P2P Learning Tours, and other collaborative projects)
  • Participate in MCC U.S./regional program Networks (Dismantling Mass Incarceration and Nonviolence Network)
  • Facilitate wisdom and accountability circle of community stakeholders and justice-impacted people

Regional-Level Advocacy – 20%

  • Develop relationships with advocacy networks and community partners in select parts of the region for advancing change at local and state levels (e.g., re-entry, sentencing, alternatives to incarceration, juvenile justice, prison policies, etc.)
  • Provide support and resourcing for congregations seeking to work on local and state level advocacy (e.g., workshops, networking, providing resources)
  • Collaborate with NPJM advocacy staff and the Mass Incarceration Network on communications, resources, and messaging for advocacy initiatives.

Regional Support and Collaboration – 10%

  • Participate in regular MCC Central States all-staff meetings (2x month), planning retreat (1 week per year), and department-specific meetings (1-2x month)
  • Collaborate with colleagues through maintaining a work calendar, communicating about absences or schedule changes, and timely response to emails/messages, etc.
  • Represent region on occasional MCC working groups as requested (no more than 2 extra-programmatic groups per year)
  • Participate in Dismantling Oppression Team on a rotating basis
  • Represent MCC at 1 regional conference annually; and in addition, 1 national conference every other year
  • Develop and follow through on annual intercultural development and anti-oppression skillset building plan for personal and professional development
  • If disbursed from the MCC Central States’ North Newton Office, additional travel will occasionally be required

Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis

Supervision: No direct supervisory responsibilities.

Travel expectations: Travel up to 20% or 52 nights away per year ​within the U.S. or Canada​

Salary Details

Base salary: $59,269.63. Starting salary may be adjusted up to $65,855.15 based on previous experience.

Benefits

Medical, dental and vision, 23 days paid vacation, sick time and 10 holidays/year. Life insurance provided, as well as long and short term disability coverage. The retirement plan, with MCC contribution of 7%, begins after six months of employment.
