Job Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, located in Lexington, Kentucky, is seeking a Vice Chair of Research with a demonstrated record of research excellence and leadership in emergency medicine or a closely related discipline. As the Department of Emergency Medicine continues to evolve and expand its academic mission, the demand for structured, high-quality research leadership has increased significantly. This key leadership role is critical to advancing the department’s research mission, fostering scholarly productivity, and supporting ongoing and future investigative initiatives.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and implement a strategic vision to grow the department’s research portfolio in both scope and impact; facilitate research education, mentorship, and participation among faculty, fellows, residents, and trainees; and strengthen the department’s integration within the broader research enterprise of the University of Kentucky. Responsibilities include conducting independent, externally funded research; providing administrative oversight of the departmental research program; supporting regulatory and operational research infrastructure; mentoring investigators at various career stages; and participating in departmental, college, and university service.
Priority will be given to candidates whose research strengths complement existing institutional priorities and who demonstrate the ability to build collaborative, interdisciplinary research programs. Depending on the candidate’s research focus, affiliated appointments in other colleges or centers within the University may be possible. This role will also contribute meaningfully to the administrative functions that support the department’s broader strategic goals, ensuring alignment with institutional expectations for academic excellence and innovation.
Applicants must possess a strong national or emerging national research reputation, demonstrate readiness to assume a senior leadership role, and have the skills necessary to develop and sustain a competitive, externally funded research program within an academic emergency medicine environment. Programmatic support includes access to established research infrastructure and institutional resources dedicated to advancing discovery and innovation.
