Volunteer Development VISTA - 2026-27

Posting Description

Volunteer Services Development VISTA

For one year, get paid to build sustainable solutions in a community, gain valuable hands on experience and prepare for your future. This full-time AmeriCorps service position offers a great opportunity to make an impact in the lives of others while building your own knowledge and skillset.

AmeriCorps VISTA members are Volunteers in Service to America who perform indirect service to build capacity and sustainable solutions.

What will you do?

The volunteer services development VISTA member will create, document, and implement plans for volunteer recruitment, scheduling, and recognition to increase the number of local volunteers and improve the overall volunteer experience. This will include evaluating current volunteer programs and resources and identifying best practices or focus engagement on specific groups, such as youth or veterans. Each new plan developed will be well documented and evaluated to ensure sustainability beyond the year of service.

  • Develop and document a volunteer recruitment plan, including targeting local community organizations. Create a volunteer recruitment community directory and a social media plan aimed at recruitment.

  • Develop and document a volunteer training plan that will ensure all volunteers have the skills needed to perform their roles successfully.

  • Develop and document systems to track volunteer hours and scheduling. Develop web-based systems needed to support these efforts, such as creating an online volunteer application.

This position will focus on volunteer services aspects of Habitat affiliate operations.

Where will you serve?

  • Organization name: Habitat for Humanity Mason County

  • Nearest metropolitan area: Olympia, WA

  • Full-time staff: 5

  • Expected number of AmeriCorps members: 3

  • Activities and attractions: Enjoy life beyond work with easy access to Olympic National Park, Olympic National Forest, and miles of scenic shoreline along Hood Canal. Spend weekends hiking, boating, camping, fishing, or harvesting local oysters, geoduck, and Dungeness crab. The area offers year-round attractions, from Shelton's Oysterfest and Belfair's Taste of Hood Canal to waterfront resorts, championship golf, and vibrant tribal cultural experiences. For thrill-seekers, Ridge Motorsports Park hosts professional racing events just outside Olympia. It's a region where outdoor adventure, natural beauty, and community come together year-round.

  • Unique projects: While we are increasing our home construction program, the program that will have a much larger and more visible impact throughout the county will be the dramatic expansion of our home preservation program. With the addition of critical repairs and aging in place services, the expansion of home preservation will increase the need for volunteers and create regular and ongoing opportunities for service throughout the community.
We will also be establishing monthly or bi-monthly Habitat Huddles, a Habitat community gathering rotating between Shelton in South County and Belfair in north county. These gatherings will be multi-faceted and may include orientation, training, education and fellowship elements, bringing together volunteers and staff on a regular basis. These will be part of a larger establishment of a renewed volunteer care and recognition program.
