Job Summary
Teach assigned integrated reading and writing courses and related classroom activities. The Instructor, Integrated Reading and Writing, is responsible for teaching developmental English courses that strengthen students' reading comprehension, writing, and academic communication skills. This position supports student learning through instruction, feedback, and progress evaluation. The successful candidate will foster a positive learning environment, engage students in the development of their writing skills, and promote academic excellence and student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Related duties may be assigned.
- Meet classes at assigned times.
- Plan course content, lessons, and assignments aligned with course outcomes.
- Teach integrated reading and writing courses that support students' reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills.
- Select appropriate texts, materials, and instructional resources.
- Maintain student records and attendance.
- Evaluate student progress, provide feedback, and assign grades.
- Communicate with students about progress, concerns, and strategies for success.
- Maintain office hours convenient for students.
- Prepare course and class reports as required.
- Attend required meetings, training, and assessment activities.
- Assist in student learning outcomes assessment at the course, program, and institution level.
- Keep abreast of developments in reading, writing, and developmental education.
- Demonstrate lifelong learning through the reading of current research and journal articles.
- Support student success through encouragement, guidance, and appropriate referrals when needed.
- Submit budget requests and written narrative when appropriate.
- Attend required meetings (faculty, division, in-service training, etc.)
- Assist in short-range and long-range planning.
- Attendance and participation in conferences related to teaching area and membership in appropriate professional organizations is recommended.
- Adhere to Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and any and policies or laws that govern higher education at Rock Valley College.
- Participate in division, college, advisory committees, and community activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in English, reading, composition, or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching integrated reading and writing, developmental English, or first-year composition
- Strong knowledge of reading comprehension and writing instruction.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to support a diverse student population.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and learning management systems.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in classroom, lab classroom, and office settings.
