SUNY Maritime College is seeking experienced towing industry professionals to join the Marine Transportation Department in a full-time instructional role. This position is ideal for a licensed tugboat or towing vessel mariner including those currently sailing who is interested in transitioning ashore while remaining closely connected to the industry. The successful candidate will bring real-world towing experience into the classroom, simulator, and waterfront training environment, preparing students for careers in:
Tug and barge operations
Harbor assist and ship handling
Coastal and inland towing
Small vessel commercial operations
Two Career Paths Available
Candidates may be considered for one of the following roles based on experience and interest:
1. Assistant Chair (Leadership Track)
Lead and manage the AAS Marine Technology (Limited License) program
Oversee curriculum, student outcomes, and program development
Work closely with faculty, administration, and industry partners
2. Faculty Member (Teaching Track)
Focus primarily on instruction and student training
Teach towing and small vessel operations courses
Support hands-on and simulation-based learning
What You'll Do
- Teach courses such as:
Advanced Towing Operations
Business of Towing
Bridge Resource Management (BRM)
- Deliver hands-on, practical instruction using:
Real-world case studies
Vessel operations scenarios
Simulation and waterfront training
- Prepare students for U.S. Coast Guard limited license and towing careers
- Set up and prepare cadet shipping billets/apprentice mate billets with industry partners and
evaluate apprentice/cadet projects.
- Mentor and advise students pursuing careers in the towing industry
- Support and utilize:
Simulation labs
Waterfront training facilities
Instructional vessels
- Build relationships with:
Tug and towing companies
Maritime employers
Industry organizations
- Participate in:
Recruitment and workforce pipeline development
Program improvement and curriculum updates
Department and college service activities
Summer Opportunities
During the summer, faculty may:
Support industry outreach and recruiting initiatives
Participate in Summer Sea Term aboard the Training Ship Empire State (for additional compensation)

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing Vessels (1600 GRT or greater)
- Valid Towing Officer Assessment Record (TOAR)
- Recent towing industry experience while actively sailing under license
- Strong knowledge of:
Tug and barge operations
Vessel handling and safety
Regulatory requirements
- Ability to translate operational experience into practical instruction
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
(Exception: Highly qualified licensed mariners without a degree may be considered based on
experience)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Designated Duty Engineer (DDE) credential (or willingness to obtain)
- Teaching, training, or mentoring experience
- Experience with maritime simulators
- Industry engagement or workforce development experience
- Graduate degree (or willingness to pursue one)
- Additional endorsements such as:
Tankerman PIC (DL/LG)
Barge
DP
Other relevant towing or vessel endorsements
Additional Considerations
Active licenses are preferred, but licenses in continuity will be considered
Commercial towing experience is strongly preferred
Relevant USN, USCG, or NOAA experience will be considered
Hawsepipers are encouraged to apply
This role is built for experienced towing professionals who want to bring their knowledge ashore and make a
direct impact on the next generation of mariners. Practical experience is valued as highly as academic
credentials.
Additional Information:
Classification: This full-time faculty UUP position will be a 10-month academic appointment (August-May). Titles,
from Lecturer (non-tenure-track) to Assistant Professor (tenure-track), will be based on
qualifications and experience. The anticipated salary will be $68,000.00 to $90,000.00 for the contract and includes an outstanding benefits package (for more information, please see the UUP Full-Time Benefits-at-a-Glance). Special Notes: Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external searches to occur simultaneously.
