Job Description:HJD Student Mentor Peer-to-Peer Support NetworkPosition Summary: Peer Support Network student mentors provide guidance and support to mentees, serving variously as role models, coaches, and allies. This is a primarily remote position with mentoring provided virtually via Zoom and at weekend in-person residences on the Ventura campus. The time commitment varies; however, it is typically 3 to 5 hours per week for the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.HJD student mentors report to the Assistant Dean of Hybrid and Online Learning.Principal Duties:<ul><li>Participate in ongoing professional learning and development, including completing an asynchronous course emphasizing mentoring knowledge and skills.</li><li>Provide a positive source of support to first year law students.</li><li>Model and emphasize the importance of a growth mindset and solution-based approaches to challenges.</li><li>Support mentees in identifying and implementing effective strategies in the following areas:<ul><li>Case reading and briefing</li><li>Course outlining</li><li>Effective learning and study strategies</li><li>Exam preparation</li><li>Priority management</li></ul></li><li>Support mentees in identifying and accessing relevant TCOL resources, such as the Academic Support Canvas shell, academic skill development workshops, etc.</li><li>Participate, when available, in TCOL student success workshops.</li><li>Commit to communicating and meeting with mentees on a regular basis, including maintaining consistent weekly virtual office hours.</li><li>Attend student mentor meetings and contribute to continuous program improvement efforts.</li><li>Maintain confidentiality.</li><li>Perform related duties as assigned.</li></ul>Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:<ul><li>Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias.</li></ul><ul><li>Interface professionally with administration, faculty, and students; works collaboratively with others.</li><li>Develop rapport, trust, and confidence with mentees and provide support in a professional and respectful manner.</li><li>Demonstrate significant interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.</li><li>Demonstrate a strong desire to help students succeed.</li><li>Efficiently and thoroughly complete tasks in a timely manner.</li><li>Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.</li></ul>Minimum Qualifications:<ul><li>Must be enrolled at The Colleges of Law and in good academic standing.</li><li>Preference will be given to students who are eligible for federal work-study.</li></ul>Compensation &amp; BenefitsThis opportunity is budgeted at $20.00 base compensation.
