Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute is seeking a Research Assistant who will work with the associate director of the Research and Knowledge Creation Division, facilitating research and/or assisting with programs, publications, and exhibitions. The ideal candidate will be a graduate student with experience in Art History, Information Studies, or Digital Humanities, with excellent data management skills and diverse research experience. Field of specialization is open. This is a 2-year, limited-term appointment.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Conducts research on various topics related to art history, digital humanities, and the wider field of scholarly communications
  • Gathers, processes, and presents institutional data on current practices and programs in peer academic institutions, as well as galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM)
  • Proofreads and edits, as needed
  • Assists with the creation of reports, project websites, and PowerPoint presentations
  • May copyedit and review texts for public dissemination or publication
  • Requests images for exhibitions and/or publications; researches and obtains art and image permissions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history or related field; Master’s degree or some graduate work preferred
  • 0-2 years research experience (education may be considered)
  • Strong skills in gathering, manipulating, analyzing, and presenting qualitative and quantitative data

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Background in Art History (field of specialization is open, but familiarity with art outside of the West is highly desirable), Information Studies, Digital Humanities, or related discipline
  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to build relationships, partner with others and work on teams
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines for oneself
  • Engagement with the broad scholarly landscape of the humanities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (required) and Adobe software suite (preferred)
  • Proficiency with various cloud-based research tools, such as Zotero and Notebook LM, or a willingness to learn these skills
  • Proficiency in data gathering and analysis, including software such as Tableau, experience in wrangling and visualizing data with R or Python, or a willingness to learn these skills
