Job Description
The National Client Group sits within Global Merchant and Network Services, which acquires and manages relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express. The National Client Group is responsible for overseeing relationships with some of the largest and most strategic U.S.-based merchants. Our goal is to be an indispensable payments partner to our merchants and help them grow by delivering differentiated products, services, insights, and partnership opportunities.
The Senior Manager, Client Management role offers the opportunity to leverage strong relationship management, consultative selling, negotiation, and strategic thinking to deepen partnerships with some of American Express' largest and most complex merchant clients. The Senior Manager will manage a portfolio of strategic National Client Group relationships, with responsibility for driving profitable growth, increasing American Express spend and share, and delivering value to both our merchant partners and American Express.
This position is suited for a professionally mature business leader with expertise in building and cultivating relationships both internally and externally and the ability to take ownership of high-profile, complex initiatives involving multiple senior-level stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess a strong strategic and commercial background, with a demonstrated ability to understand client priorities, identify growth opportunities, and develop innovative solutions that create mutual value. They will also have strong financial and analytical capabilities, along with the ability to lead and deliver results in a fast-paced, highly complex, and matrixed environment.
Responsibilities
• Negotiation: Develop innovative partnerships and negotiate profitable deal structures, value levers, pricing scenarios, and contractual terms that balance client objectives with American Express economics.
• Relationship Management: Build, cultivate, and expand senior-level relationships with merchants and across American Express, serving as a trusted advisor and identifying solutions that strengthen partnerships and drive mutual growth.
• Business Development: Drive charge volume growth, revenue, share, and profitability by developing an in-depth understanding of each merchant's business and strategic priorities and connecting those needs with American Express products, capabilities, and services.
• Strategy Development: Develop and execute client strategies that identify opportunities to increase spend and share on American Express through innovative partnerships, marketing initiatives, products, and other value-added solutions.
• P&L Management: Own the economics and profitability of assigned client relationships, identifying opportunities to optimize financial performance while developing and executing long-term strategic growth plans.
• Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead complex initiatives across American Express by effectively partnering with teams including Strategic Partnerships, Marketing, Finance, Pricing, Risk, Operations, Compliance, and Legal to deliver integrated solutions for clients.
Qualifications
• Experienced relationship manager with a proven ability to build and deepen complex client relationships, identify client needs, sell B2C and B2B programs and initiatives, and uncover new opportunities to grow revenue and share.
• Demonstrated experience negotiating complex commercial agreements, with an understanding of card acceptance economics, profitability levers, financial statements, and client economics.
• Proven consultative selling skills, with the ability to translate client needs into compelling solutions, close deals, and deliver measurable results.
• Strong executive presence and communication skills, both internally and externally, with the ability to lead senior-level discussions, navigate complex stakeholder environments, and influence decision-making.
• Strong strategic, financial, and analytical capabilities, with the ability to assess business opportunities, develop recommendations, and balance growth with profitability.
• Demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and initiative to generate ideas, identify new business opportunities, solve complex challenges, and develop differentiated client solutions.
• Ability to influence without direct authority and collaborate effectively across a highly matrixed organization to mobilize resources and deliver against client and business priorities.

The below represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we’ll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.
Salary range
- $103,750 - $174,750 per year
