POSITION SUMMARY

The Horne lab at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Chemistry is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate to join an interdisciplinary research team focused on the development and application of synthetic molecules that mimic peptides and proteins. This position is funded under the NIH project “Exploring the Impact of Altered Backbone Composition on Protein Folding and Function.” The overall objective is to develop of strategies for mimicry of protein tertiary structure by macromolecules with artificial backbones. The work entails the application of a range of methods spanning chemical protein synthesis, experimental biophysics (e.g., circular dichroism, fluorescence, stopped-flow, biolayer interferometry), and structural biology (e.g., X-ray crystallography, NMR) to interrogate folded structure, folding energetics, and function in protein mimetics. The candidate will independently design and carry out experiments under the general guidance of the PI. They will analyze results, maintain a detailed record of research activities, and help to shape the direction for the project. They will assist with training and mentoring of graduate students and other junior lab members. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related discipline. Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills as well as strong written and oral communication skills are essential.

The University of Pittsburgh is an equal opportunity employer.
