Position Summary
The Department of Applied Biomedical Sciences invites part-time faculty candidates for Assistant/Associate Professor of Pathology at the School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) at the University of the Incarnate Word . This non-tenure track faculty position will teach Pathology to osteopathic medical students within the DO curriculum.

In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission. Official duties and responsibilities of part-time faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities.

The faculty member will operate within the UIWSOM framework of lifelong learning through collaborative scholarship, innovative educational excellence, and learner-centered curricula. The faculty member will be expected to facilitate small interactive group sessions and engage in case-based and large group discussions. It is strongly preferred that research activity be consistent with the UIWSOM research/scholarly activity strategic plan, including medical education research.

This position teaches out of the UIW's Brooks City Base Campus located at 7615 Kennedy Hill, San Antonio, TX 78235.

Essential Functions
  • Teach pathology in a learner-centered, case-based curriculum that involves the collaborative development and implementation of competency-based, innovative, and integrated teaching and learning strategies within a clinical context.
  • Participate in curriculum development.
  • Actively participate in professional development activities to improve academic skills and facilitation of a medical curriculum.
  • Undergo training to qualify as a facilitator in the case-based and problem-based learning program and UIWSOM curriculum delivery methods Advise students and provide individual help to students during weekly office hour.
  • Provide service to the department, college, university, community, and profession.
  • Adhere to UIW Faculty Handbook and UIWSOM Supplemental Faculty Handbook policies and processes including timely record keeping of student activities, fair and equitable evaluation of student performance, and timely feedback to students regarding their performance in the course.
  • Serve on committees and subcommittees as appointed by the Dean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.


Required Education
DO or MD Degree from a COCA or LCME accredited medical school.

Required Work Experience
  • Three (3) years of successful experience teaching (part-time or full-time) pathology at the medical school or residency level, as evidenced by student reviews.
  • Completion of an Anatomic & Clinical Pathology residency at an ACGME-accredited program.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of post-residency professional experience working in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology.
  • Experience as teaching faculty.
  • Demonstrated flexibility in a fast paced environment for which adaptability is critical.
  • Fluent in Spanish.


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
  • Board certified or eligible in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology.
  • Valid unrestricted Texas medical license, or ability to obtain Texas licensure within 2 years.
