Position Summary
The Military and Veteran Services Specialist & School Certifying Official serves as a primary point of contact for military-affiliated students at UIW, providing exceptional customer service and administering U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance, and other educational benefits. The Military and Veteran Services Specialist & School Certifying Official reports to the Assistant Director of the Military & Veteran Center.
This is an on-main-campus position, not eligible for remote work.

Job Duties
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to consistently provide excellent customer service and diffuse difficult situations.
- Strong mathematical, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively conduct basic presentations.
- Ability to communicate and work well with current/potential students and UIW faculty/staff.
- Strong use and knowledge of professional business etiquette in the workplace.
- Ability to identify, solve, and follow through on problems.
- Strong attention to detail. Ability to maintain accurate records in military, VA, and UIW databases.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook or similar.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
- Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
Bachelor's Degree.
Required Work Experience
One (1) year of professional experience serving in the military in an administrative capacity OR one (1) year of professional experience working with military-connected students, veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, and eligible dependent spouses and/or children. Note that student services or advising/ counseling experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience utilizing VA systems such as VA Enrollment Manager (formerly VA-ONCE) and managing VA education benefit certifications.
- Two (2) years or more of professional experience in higher education, veterans' services, student affairs, enrollment services, financial aid, or a closely related field.
- Experience developing procedures, conducting training, and collaborating with campus departments to support military-connected student success and institutional compliance.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
- Must have a valid driver's license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.
- Valid ID with "Real ID" designation required for air travel.
Work Hours
Typical Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional evening and weekend hours may be necessary to support peak enrollment activities and special events.Occasional travel may be required to attend state and national conferences, as well as professional development opportunities.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift up to 10lbs for table set-up/tear-down at events.
- Ability to lift up to 15 lbs of office/marketing/event/supplies.
- Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat to retrieve office/marketing/event/library materials.
- Ability to push/pull /equipment/event/marketing carts/wagons holding up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
- Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage faculty/staff/donors/guests/(potential/current) students, as well as attend meetings on and off campus.
